As the Arizona summer heat begins to roll in it's our clue to pivot, make sun tea, and lean into a slow down season for reflection. The 2nd Quarter season is a time to ponder, reflect, pray, express gratitude, travel a bit for some personal rest/ soul renovation and to visit family and explore new gardens that ignite inspiration for the farm and future intimate gatherings.
Reflection is an important piece. We believe we won't have clarity about the future without pondering the past. We believe vision casting grows from the seeds of beauty planted in the previous season. Hope, courage and big, out of the box, dreams for the future are themes on the Project White Board. (stay tuned)
Speaking of reflections - I just re-read Kate's piece on Celebrating Kidding Season here. And this first piece by Arizona Highways TV here.
Farm life does not stand still. Plants need extra water, trees need pruning, shade cloth needs refastened, roses need fertilized and weekly dead heading. Raised beds get fluffed up - prepping for seeding and planting of fall vegetables like chard, heirloom tomatoes, French Breakfast Radishes, French lettuces, broccoli, cabbage and flowers interspersed for pops of beauty and color. We're fertilizing fruit trees and looking forward to rose pruning in October.
We're also working hard on keeping the animals cool. The goats don't suffer quite as much as the chickens. Our breed is Nubians and they cant tolerate heat better - the hens not so much. Michael has hooked up a mister system and huge fan to help keep them cooler.
